What are the Adrenal Glands & What do they Do?
The adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys and make several very important hormones in the body.
Cortisol, the main stress hormone, is a major player in regulating blood sugar, metabolism, the immune system, inflammation and much more. Under prolonged stress, the adrenal gland needs to keep making cortisol, often at the expense of the other hormones it also makes.
Stress can be emotional, but it can also be physical, such as fasting and skipping meals, over exercising, infections, chronic illness, family illness.
Progesterone, DHEA, Testosterone and Estrogen are all made in the adrenal glands. During the reproductive years, the ovaries (and the testes in men), are the primary place these hormones are made.
