Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy
Women in their 40's often begin to experience PMS symptoms that are either new or different than what they've been used to. Symptoms such as breast tenderness, moodiness, irregular bleeding, and food cravings can be caused by what is called, Estrogen Dominance.
What is Estrogen Dominance?
Estrogen Dominance is also thought to be important for women with fibrocystic breasts, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis.
Normally estrogen and progesterone exist in a balanced relationship, but many things can create a hormonal imbalance. As women approach Menopause (really after 40), they tend to make less Progesterone because they don't ovulate as regularly as they used to. Low progesterone is common at this time, but can be present all through a women's reproductive years, and beyond into Menopause.
Estrogen Dominance simply means that you are having too much estrogen relative to progesterone and thus the symptoms. It can be caused by too little progesterone, but there is usually also too much strong estrogen. Estrogens can be made in the body, or they can be ingested in the form of pesticides (xenoestrogens) and other environmental exposures. All women tend to accumulate these harsh Estrogens as they age.

Our approach is to aid in supporting progesterone, while at the same time helping to "detoxify" or remove some of the estrogen excess.
We support progesterone by using an herbal blend of Chastetreeberry called Chasteberry plus. In our office, we often add Progesterone cream from the Compounding Pharmacy, but this option can only be done with a Medical Consult, either by phone or in person. We support the "detoxification" and balancing of estrogen by helping the liver to process estrogen in a healthy way. We know that there are "good" detox pathways in the liver that result in the "good" estrogen metabolites called 2-Estrones.
We know that there are several "bad" pathways that produce a more toxic form of estrogen, called 4 and 16 estrones. These are harsher, damage DNA, and produce more symptoms. It is optimal to have more good estrogen than bad, since it is believed to be protective for Breast Cancer, in addition to being gentler in the body.
Using Supplements & Diet to Balance Hormone Levels Naturally
We have genes that tell our liver which pathways to use, so our genetics do influence if we are making good or bad estrogens. But there are many nutritional factors that can change the balance, and this is where our focus is. There is a compound in cruciferous vegetables, called Indole-3-carbinole (I-3-C), which pushes the liver to use the 2-estrone pathway. We can measure the ratio of 2:16 (good:bad) and we know that I-3-C increases the good and decreases the bad. We use Meta-I-3-C, 1 tablet twice daily. Not only is this good for cancer prevention, but it treats symptoms at the same time.
Our other favorite product for estrogen balance is Estrium Protein Powder. This protein drink provides nutritional support for symptoms related to female hormone cycles. It is specially formulated from rice protein, phytoestrogens from Kudzu and flax, plus many more anti-oxidants and nutrients that will benefit women with: abdominal discomfort, breast tenderness, feeling bloated, feeling sad or blue, occasional irritability, temporary weight gain, water retention/swelling. 2 Scoops daily, mixed with water or juice, fruit and ice are optional.
